8 Weeks Before Departure
The earlier you start, the more options you have. Many processes — blocked accounts, accommodation applications, and international bank cards — take 3–6 weeks and cannot be rushed.
- Confirm visa validity dates and your permitted entry deadline (different from expiry date)
- Check your passport — must have 6+ months of validity beyond your visa expiry, not just your travel date
- Book flights — aim for 2–3 days before your university's orientation week begins
- Apply for university accommodation, or confirm your private housing arrangement in writing
- Open a Wise multi-currency account — avoids poor airport exchange rates and works in 40+ currencies
- Germany students: open a blocked account with Expatrio or Fintiba — required for student visa and takes 2–4 weeks to set up
- Research SIM card options for your destination country — some providers let you order a SIM before arrival
- Get academic transcripts, degree certificates, and letters of recommendation attested if required by your university or country
4 Weeks Before Departure
This is the time to sort your finances, insurance, and documents. Four weeks gives you enough buffer if anything needs to be redone.
- Buy international travel and health insurance — do not wait; many countries require this before arrival
- Apply for a forex travel card — Wise or a bank-issued travel card will serve you far better than cash exchanged at the airport
- Collect all original documents: degree certificates, transcripts, letters of recommendation — originals, not photocopies
- Get a police clearance certificate if your university or destination country requires one
- Research local bank options at your destination — some UK and German banks require an in-person branch visit to open an account
- Download your university's student portal app and verify your login credentials work
- Join your university's international student WhatsApp or Facebook groups — invaluable for accommodation tips and peer advice
2 Weeks Before Departure
Final document preparation, packing, and logistics. This is when most students realise they forgot something — use this list to avoid that.
- Print your admission letter, visa, and accommodation proof — carry originals in hand luggage, not just on your phone
- Confirm check-in date, time, and address with your accommodation provider
- Pack essentials — see packing list below
- Research public transport routes from the airport to your accommodation and download the relevant apps
- Download Google Maps offline for your destination city — useful if you arrive without a data SIM
- Call your Indian bank's customer care and inform them you will be using your debit/credit card abroad — prevents fraud blocks
- Carry a small amount of destination currency (GBP, EUR, etc.) for the first 1–2 days before your Wise card is active

Day of Departure — At the Airport
International flights from India require you to be at the airport well ahead of time. Indian immigration counters can have long queues, especially during peak travel seasons (September–October, January–February).
- Arrive at least 3 hours early for international flights
- Have your passport and visa ready and accessible — not buried at the bottom of your bag — for immigration checks
- Customs: India allows the export of up to ₹25,000 in Indian Rupees cash. The limit for foreign currency is USD 3,000 without a declaration form; amounts up to USD 10,000 must be declared at customs. (Source: CBIC customs procedures for international air travel)
- Do NOT carry soil, seeds, or plants — India enforces agriculture export restrictions and you may face confiscation or delays
- Prescription drugs must be accompanied by a doctor's letter and original prescription — carry these in your cabin bag
- Do not carry undeclared excess cash — penalties apply
- Indian pickles and chutneys in sealed, commercial packaging are generally fine in checked luggage; fresh fruits and vegetables are often restricted at your destination country — check before packing
Country-Specific Notes
What Indian Students Need on Arrival in the UK
If you are travelling to the UK on a Student Visa, a few additional steps apply specifically to UK arrivals.
- Download and set up the UK eVisa share code before you fly — UK border officers verify your right to be in the UK through your eVisa, not a physical visa sticker
- Have GBP 1,000–2,000 accessible for your first month: accommodation deposits, groceries, and transport before your bank account is active
- NHS surcharge was paid as part of your visa application fee — you do not need separate health insurance for NHS access during your studies
- Collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) from the designated post office within 10 days of arrival — your visa approval letter specifies the collection point

What Indian Students Need on Arrival in Germany
Germany has several administrative requirements that must be completed within days of arrival — missing these deadlines causes downstream problems with your blocked account release and bank account opening.
- Register your address (Anmeldung) at the local Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office) within 2 weeks of arrival — this is legally required and needed for almost every other process in Germany
- Your blocked account releases €934 per month after you complete Anmeldung and provide the registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) to Expatrio or Fintiba
- Get a German SIM card for local calls and affordable data — Vodafone, O2, and Telekom all have student-friendly prepaid plans
- Open a German bank account (N26 or Deutsche Bank) — most require your Anmeldung certificate and student enrolment proof
