Germany's dMAT is now part of the APS process for Indian Engineering, Commerce and Business graduates applying for Summer Semester 2027. Exam pattern, syllabus, fee, test centres, scoring and preparation, from official sources.
If you graduated in engineering, B.Com, BBA or economics and you are planning a Master's in Germany, there is one more step in your file that did not exist last year.
On 29 June 2026, APS India announced the Digital Master Test, or dMAT. It is not a university entrance exam and it is not an English test. It sits inside the APS document verification process, and for the students it applies to, there is no way around it. No dMAT certificate means no APS certificate. No APS certificate means no German student visa.
The first exam is on 26 September 2026 and registration closes on 15 September. That is a short window, and a lot of the information floating around right now is either wrong or copied from other blogs. Everything below is taken from the official pages of d-mat.de and APS India, with the source linked at every point so you can check it yourself.
The dMAT is a standardised, computer-based aptitude test developed by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) together with German universities including Ulm and Kassel, with support from the DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service. If you have heard of TestAS, this comes from the same organisation.
It has two parts. A Core Module that measures general reasoning ability, and a Subject Module. For Indian APS applicants, the subject part is the General Academic Module. Both parts are single-answer multiple choice, and both are taken in one sitting.
The important thing to understand is what the test is not. It is not a syllabus exam. The official material is explicit that the dMAT measures transfer and application skills rather than memorised factual knowledge. You cannot mug up a book for it. You can, however, get significantly faster at the question types, which is where preparation actually pays.
India is Germany's largest source of international students, with roughly 60,000 Indian students enrolled out of more than 400,000 international students in the country. That volume is exactly the problem the dMAT is meant to solve.
A spokesperson for the German Embassy explained the reasoning to The PIE News: grading practices vary enormously between Indian institutions, so a transcript on its own does not tell a German admissions committee much. A 78 percent from one university and a 78 percent from another are not the same thing, and there is no reliable way for a professor in Aachen to know the difference.
The same spokesperson was clear about what the test is not meant to do: "The dMAT should not be understood as a simple pass/fail barrier. A low score does not automatically prevent the issuance of an APS certificate, provided the other APS requirements are met." They also framed it as an opportunity, saying it "can also benefit well-prepared applicants, as it gives them an additional opportunity to present their academic strengths in a standardized and comparable format."
Read that honestly. It is one more test, one more fee and one more deadline in an already long process. But it is also the first time an Indian applicant from a lesser-known university gets a score that is directly comparable with a candidate from a top NIT.
This is where most of the confusion sits, so take it slowly.
Per APS India, the dMAT applies to Master's applicants from India whose previous degree falls into one of three fields:
And it applies only if you are applying to start a Master's programme in Summer Semester 2027 or later.

The wording printed on your degree certificate matters more than what you feel your degree was. A B.E. or B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering sits inside Engineering, so the dMAT applies. A plain B.Sc. Computer Science is not an engineering degree, so on the current field list it does not. Same subject, different degree title, different requirement.
If your degree title is anywhere near the boundary, do not guess and do not take a consultant's word for it, including mine. Check the affected-fields list published by APS India for your exact degree nomenclature before you pay anything.
The structure below comes from the official General Academic Module preparatory material (PDF) published by g.a.s.t.
| Part | Section | Tasks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Module | Figure Sequences | 20 | 25 minutes |
| Mathematical Equations | 20 | 25 minutes | |
| Latin Squares | 20 | 25 minutes | |
| Break | - | about 30 minutes | |
| Subject Module | General Academic Module | Multiple choice, 4 options per question | 90 minutes |
Total time at the centre is around three and a half hours including the break.
Notice the pace. Twenty tasks in twenty-five minutes is 75 seconds per question. Nobody fails these because the maths is hard. They run out of time.
This is where the test gets broad. The official material lists the topic areas as mathematics, computational sciences, natural sciences, engineering, business administration, economics, social sciences and humanities. Each task presents a typical problem followed by related questions.
Sample tasks in the official PDF include vector calculations such as scalar and cross products, hydrostatics and fluid dynamics, inventory management optimisation, and social science research methodology. Yes, a B.Com graduate may see a physics-flavoured item and an engineer may see a research-methods item. That is intentional. It is testing whether you can read an unfamiliar problem, extract the logic and apply it, not whether you memorised that chapter in third semester.
The exact number of items in the General Academic Module is not published by g.a.s.t. Plan around the 90-minute limit rather than a question count.
There is no pass mark. The official certificate page describes two numbers on your result:
Scores are standardised against all participants at all test centres and on all test dates, so you are effectively benchmarked against every dMAT taker, not just the room you sat in.
The certificate is valid indefinitely and you download it yourself from the g.a.s.t. participant portal once results are released. There is no email or phone notification, so you have to log in and check.
APS India's own FAQ states plainly that "a low dMAT score does not automatically lead to refusal of the APS certificate", and that the dMAT "does not replace APS document verification, university admission decisions or anabin recognition". Two things follow from that sentence, and both are important:

For the September 2026 sitting, g.a.s.t. has listed test centres in ten Indian cities: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.
Seats at each centre are allocated on a first-come basis, so the city you want is not guaranteed if you register on the last day. Your exact venue and reporting time appear in the participant portal roughly five days before the exam.
From the official g.a.s.t. terms and conditions (PDF):
The APS steps for a Bachelor's graduate, as set out in the official June 2026 APS leaflet, now run like this:
The dMAT certificate is one of the required documents alongside your Class X and XII records, all semester marksheets, degree certificate, Aadhaar, passport copy and language certificates. APS India will accept your documents before your dMAT result is out, but it will not issue your final APS certificate until the dMAT result has been received and verified. Your dMAT result is then referenced on the APS certificate itself.
Practically, this means the September dMAT date is what gates your Summer Semester 2027 timeline. APS processing time is not fixed. It depends on how quickly your university and board respond to verification requests, and that is outside anyone's control.
You cannot study content for this test. You can absolutely train for it, and the biggest gain is speed, not knowledge.
g.a.s.t. publishes preparatory PDFs with sample tasks, solutions and worked methods, plus five short instruction videos on the official preparation page: a general introduction, and one each for Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations, Latin Squares and the Subject Module. The official guidance is to use all available material, because no guidance is given during the exam itself. Watch every video before you touch any paid coaching. There are already institutes selling dMAT courses. Almost none of them have seen a real paper.
Do not solve Latin Squares comfortably at your own pace and assume you are ready. Set a 75-second timer per item from your very first practice session. The failure mode in this exam is time, every time.
No calculator, no rough sheet, no notes. If you have spent four years with a scientific calculator, that muscle is gone. Fifteen minutes of daily mental algebra for two weeks will do more for your Mathematical Equations score than any course.
For the General Academic Module, pick problems from outside your discipline. A commerce graduate should work through a fluid mechanics word problem, an engineer should work through an inventory optimisation or a research-methodology item. You are training the skill of extracting structure from a passage you do not recognise.
There is no cutoff. Prepare enough to give a fair account of yourself, and put the rest of your energy into the parts of your application that actually decide admission: your CGPA, your SOP, your letters of recommendation and your uni-assist deadlines.
Not sure whether your degree title puts you in scope?
Send me a photo of your degree certificate and your intended intake, and I will tell you straight whether you need the dMAT, and whether your university is recognised in anabin, which matters more than the test does.
Be honest with yourself about the calendar. As of this writing, 26 September 2026 is the only dMAT date announced for India, and no further dates have been published by g.a.s.t. or APS India.
If you miss registration, your realistic options are:
The dMAT is a real additional hurdle, and anyone telling you it is nothing is selling something. It costs 150 euro, it takes three and a half hours, and it adds a hard deadline into a process that already had too many.
But it is not the thing that will decide your admission. It has no cutoff, a weak score does not block your APS certificate, and the certificate never expires. Register before 15 September, spend two weekends on the official practice material, and then go back to worrying about the things that actually move the needle: your CGPA, your SOP, and whether your university is properly listed in anabin.
No. There is no pass mark and no cutoff. Your result is reported as a dMAT score from 0 to 200, with a mean of 100, plus a percentile rank. APS India states that a low dMAT score does not automatically lead to refusal of the APS certificate.
No. The dMAT applies only to Master's applicants. Bachelor's applicants, PhD applicants and students on officially confirmed exchange or double-degree programmes are exempt.
No. It is an additional element in your APS documentation. APS still verifies your degree documents, and your dMAT result is referenced on the APS certificate. The dMAT also does not replace anabin recognition of your university or a university's own admission decision.
The dMAT certificate is valid indefinitely. Once results are released, you download it from your g.a.s.t. participant portal at any time.
No. No aids are permitted, and the official material states you may not take notes at any point during the exam. Calculators, phones, smartwatches and fitness trackers are all banned from the desk.
The official preparatory material advises candidates to answer even when they are unsure, so there is no reason to leave any question blank. g.a.s.t. does not publish a penalty for wrong answers.
The requirement is based on the field printed on your degree, and the published fields are Engineering, Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics, and Business / Management. A B.E. or B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering falls under Engineering. A standalone B.Sc. Computer Science is not an engineering degree. Because the exact degree title decides this, verify yours against the affected-fields list published by APS India before you register.
You can deregister through the participant portal only up to the registration deadline, and a refund is issued minus an administration fee of up to 15 percent. After the deadline, not attending means the fee is forfeited and no certificate is issued.
