The mandatory CSP pre-screening is now Phase 1 of your visa journey. Here's exactly what to do, document by document, week by week.
India is in a special category for German visa processing. Unlike many countries where you walk into a consulate, Indian applicants must first complete a mandatory digital pre-screening through the Consular Services Portal (CSP) operated by the German Embassy. Only after CSP approval can you book a biometrics appointment at VFS Global.
You need a formal unconditional admission (Zulassung) from a German university, not a conditional offer. For TU9/public universities, most decisions arrive January–March for a winter semester and May–July for a summer semester. Don't start CSP without this document.
Go to visa.diplo.de → select India → Student Visa (Nationales Visum). Create an account with your passport email. The form asks for: personal details, intended university, programme name, start date, duration of study, and financial details. Fill in exact values from your admission letter.
See the full checklist below. Upload in PDF format, file size under 2MB each. Scans must be legible, blurry scans are a common reason for rejection. Name files clearly (e.g., "Passport_Front.pdf", "Blocked_Account_Certificate.pdf"). Do not password-protect PDFs.
After submission you receive an auto-acknowledgement email. A consulate officer then reviews your application within 4–12 weeks. You may receive queries via email, respond within 5 business days to avoid your slot lapsing. Track the portal regularly.
If pre-screening passes, you receive an email with a unique invitation code and a deadline to book your VFS appointment (usually 30 days). Do not delay, codes expire. If your application needs corrections, CSP will tell you what to resubmit.
Go to vfsglobal.com/Germany/India. Enter your CSP invitation code to unlock appointment slots. Choose the nearest VFS centre from 8 cities. Slots fill within hours, book as soon as you receive your code. Morning slots on weekdays are easiest to get.
Bring originals and one photocopy of each document on the checklist. Organise in the order listed. Do not fold originals. Put your name and "Germany Student Visa" on a cover sheet. VFS will retain copies and return originals after the appointment.
Arrive 15 minutes early. The appointment takes 20–40 minutes. Staff check your documents, take your biometrics (all 10 fingerprints + photograph), and process the €75 visa fee (cash or card accepted at most centres). You receive a receipt and a tracking number.
VFS forwards your file to the nearest German consulate (Delhi, Mumbai, or Chennai). Processing takes 6–12 weeks, up to 16 weeks June–August. Track status on the VFS portal. You may be called for a consulate interview, this is rare for student visas but more common for courses with dual-use potential (defence, nuclear).
Once approved, VFS sends an SMS. Collect your passport with the national visa (Nationales Visum, Type D) pasted inside. Verify: your name spelling, date of birth, start date, and "Zweck: Studium" (purpose: study) are all correct. Report errors immediately, they must be fixed before travel.
Prepare these before starting CSP registration. Phase 1 (CSP) requires digital PDF uploads; Phase 2 (VFS) requires originals + one copy.
| Proof Type | Required Amount | Accepted? | Notes |

| Blocked account (Sperrkonto) | €11,904 (full year) | ✓ Primary | Expatrio or Fintiba, most common route |
| DAAD scholarship letter | Full coverage | ✓ Primary | Replaces blocked account entirely |
| University scholarship | Full coverage | ✓ Primary | Stipend must cover living expenses (€934/month) |
| German resident sponsor (Verpflichtungserklärung) | Full commitment | △ Case-by-case | Sponsor must prove financial capacity; rare for students |

Blocked account in practice: €11,904 = 12 × €992 (updated January 2024). You deposit this lump sum; it's then "blocked" and released at €992/month after you arrive in Germany. Think of it as a regulated savings account that proves you have enough to live for one year. See our Expatrio vs Fintiba comparison guide for how to open one.
Start APS DigiLocker process immediately if not done. Upload documents to APS portal within days of receiving final Class 12 / Bachelor's marks. Target APS certificate by late March.
Apply to German universities via Uni-Assist or direct portals. Admission decisions for WS 2026/27 typically arrive April–June. Begin blocked account opening (Expatrio/Fintiba), process takes 2–4 weeks.
As soon as you receive your admission letter: Register on CSP portal and upload all documents. This is your most time-sensitive action, every week of delay pushes your entire visa timeline back.
CSP review in progress (4–12 weeks). Continue preparing: arrange travel health insurance, write SOP if you haven't, get accommodation. Respond to any CSP queries within 5 days.
Receive CSP invitation code. Book VFS appointment immediately, slots go within hours. Appointment typically available within 1–2 weeks of booking.
VFS biometrics appointment. Submit all original documents. Pay €75 visa fee. Receive VFS receipt and tracking number.
Consulate processes your application (6–12 weeks, but peak season may stretch to 12–16 weeks). Visa approval typically arrives August–September for an October semester start.
Collect visa, book flights, arrange airport pickup. Arrive in Germany. First week: register at Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' office), open bank account, enroll in statutory health insurance, get your Matrikelkarte from university.
Before 2026, a rejected applicant could file a "remonstration", a written request asking the consulate to reconsider internally. This has been abolished. A rejection now means you must reapply from scratch (new CSP registration, new VFS appointment, new fees) or file a case in German administrative courts. That process takes years and costs lakhs. Apply perfectly the first time.
German consulates are located in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. Your VFS centre may not match your consulate, that's normal. VFS is just the biometrics collection point; the actual visa decision happens at whichever consulate covers your home state.
Your German student visa (Nationales Visum) is a long-stay entry visa. Within 90 days of arrival, you must convert it to a residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) at your local Ausländerbehörde (foreigners' authority). Bring: passport, visa, APS certificate, enrolment confirmation from university, proof of health insurance, and your Anmeldung (registration certificate from the Einwohnermeldeamt).
| Task | Where | When |
